Service Options - SkyTel Maintenance

SkyTel Maintenance is insurance for devices purchased from SkyTel, including devices on "rent-to-own" plans. Maintenance covers defects and malfunctions of purchased devices, specifically internal electrical and mechanical functions that appear under typical operating conditions.

Maintenance purchased for a new, warranted device gives you the assurance that when something goes wrong, SkyTel will manage all necessary repairs or replacements; there's no need to contact the device manufacturer. Maintenance extends the life of your wireless investment, providing coverage long after the initial purchase.

SkyTel Maintenance protection must be added within 30 days of initial device purchase.

What does SkyTel Maintenance provide?

If a device purchased from SkyTel becomes nonfunctional under normal operating conditions, the SkyTel Maintenance plan provides the customer with a replacement device. The replacement device will be a similar model with similar services, of the same approximate age; therefore, the replacement device may be reconditioned and not new.

Replacement devices are based on equipment availability at the time of replacement. SkyTel Maintenance does not guarantee that the replacement device will be an exact match in every way with the original unit, or that the replacement device will be a new unit. For example, the overall memory in a replacement device may be different from the original, or a particular case color may not be available and the replacement unit will be black instead of the original case color.

Examples under which a maintained device may be replaced include:

  • The device is completely inoperable (will not turn on with a new or fully charged battery)
  • A part of the device is faulty or inoperable, including
    • Internal antenna(s)
    • Electrical connections
    • LCD display
    • Vibe motor
    • Speaker
    • Backlight
    • Keyboard (if applicable)

Customers should contact SkyTel Customer Service to report problems and troubleshoot the device with a SkyTel representative. If our representative determines that a replacement is justified, you will be given instructions to return the defective device to SkyTel.

Once the returned device is assessed by the SkyTel inventory staff or its designated repair facility staff, SkyTel reserves the right to determine whether a replacement is necessary and whether a malfunction has occurred outside of normal operating conditions.

What isn't covered under SkyTel Maintenance?

SkyTel Maintenance does not cover lost or stolen devices, or damage caused by abuse, neglect or adverse operating conditions including moisture (water damage, paint etc.), plaster, concrete, or extreme temperatures. Any device that is destroyed, crushed, mashed or minced will be considered damaged under adverse conditions and beyond repair.

In addition, the following items are not included under maintenance:

  • Broken or lost battery covers
  • Broken, cracked, bent or lost holsters, belt clips or lanyards
  • Cracked, dented or melted cases
  • Intentional device disfigurement, including application of stickers, use of permanent markers, paint or plaster.
  • Teeth marks
  • Dead or weak batteries
  • Temporary inoperability when we determine the problem to be a network issue and not device related. This may include gaps in coverage and temporary network failure.
