Forward Path

1. SkyTel Network Operating Center (NOC): Fully redundant with sites in Jackson, MS and Plano, TX.

2. Satellite: Distribution path to land-based transmitter network. SkyTel uses a satellite system and a terrestrial wireless data network as backup for communications.

3. Base Transmitter: Data rate is 25.6 kbps at 940 MHz. Each transmitter has a primary data feed from the satellite and a backup connection through a terrestrial wireless data network to the NOC.

4. Wireless Data Transceivers: The transceiver reports remote data and is the actual "ReFLEX telemetry device."  The telemetry device can receive data from a source via the Forward Path and can report data back via the Reverse Path.  Transmissions can be at specified time intervals, triggered by events, and on demand.

5. Base Receiver: Receives data from wireless data transceiver and sends it to the NOC via a wireless data network.

The SkyTel Network Operations Center

The Network Operations Center (NOC) is the heart of the SkyTel 2Way Network. The NOC consists of the computer systems and the RF and telecommunications infrastructure that makes 2Way data transmissions possible. The NOC was developed by SkyTel at an expense of over $60 million ($U.S.). Consequently, SkyTel controls the architecture and can expeditiously implement new, value added services for its customers.

Each NOC is comprised of redundant and diverse HP servers operating in tandem. Each specific server is fully redundant within cabinet and as a node on the computer system wide-area network. Each NOC is fully configured for sufficient capacity to singularly operate the Advanced Messaging Network.

A fundamental capability of the NOC is the management of the ReFLEX 2.7 protocol from Motorola among and between the RF infrastructure and the Advanced Messaging Units. The ReFLEX protocol from Motorola is a robust wireless data protocol jointly developed by SkyTel and Motorola.
